Impact Of Ww2 On Children (The Forgotten Victims Of World War II) Essay

Impact Of Ww2 On Children (The Forgotten Victims Of World War II) - Essay Example Youth showed strength and unity in face of adversity. The hardships that children had to bear during World War II are beyond imagination. Restriction of diet, evacuations to be safe from air raids and bombings, loss of family members, and disruption of education systems are only a few of the problems faced by these brave souls. World War II, as often called as â€Å"War against children†, saw kids who were hungry, displaced, murdered, abused, and kidnapped. Post war humanitarian movements to protect these children were initiated very late. This paper focuses describing the different ways these precious minds were affected by World War II. The monumental effects will be briefly explained in order to give a rough idea of how horrifying the war experiences were for these kids. It was a critical time which resulted in reorganization of the whole society. For many children, World War II was the defining experience of their lives. Some associated the times with patriotism while some with intense consciousness of being part of a generation distinct from others. Others saw the era with great anxiety, a period of family separation or bearing heavy personal and financial losses. The pressures exerted on these children affected their daily lives as well as their way of thinking. Children along with elders were voluntarily or involuntarily forced to not only exert their every move towards war efforts but also solve day to day problems on their own. This paper is an attempt to explore the variety of effects World War II created on the youth. 1.2 Impact of World War II on Children’s Daily lives Juliet Gardiner asserts that â€Å"the forgotten victims of World War Two were the children.â € ("Children and World War Two") It did not matter to which country they belonged to, whether they were American, British, and Japanese or from Poland, youth of all regions were massively affected by it. In Britain alone, nearly 2 million children were evacuated from their homes at the start of the War. ("Children and World War Two") An uncountable number of killings gave rise to many orphans. Otherwise, as most of the men of a family entered war, daily life of the younger ones was mostly affected. They had to face time away from not just fathers, uncles, and brothers but also long hours away from mothers, who took place of husbands in factories. Once the bombing

Alcoholic beverage Essay Example for Free

Alcoholic beverage Essay TGIF! How many people love to end a long, hard and stressful week with a cold beer in their hands? I know I do! Sixty-seven percent of U. S. adults drink alcohol, a slight increase over last year and the highest reading recorded since 1985 by one percentage point. Beer remains the favorite beverage among drinkers, followed by wine and then liquor. Usually people would think beer is only for drinking and getting a little buzz, but in reality, there is a deeper meaning to beer that is used for several of things that may surprise you. Beer is one of the worlds oldest prepared beverages; possibly dating back to the early Neolithic or 9500 BC, when cereal was first farmed, and is recorded in the written history of ancient Iraq and ancient Egypt. Archaeologists speculate that beer was instrumental in the formation of civilizations. Beer was the first alcoholic beverage known to civilization; however, who drank the first beer is unknown. Historians theorize that humankinds fondness for beer and other alcoholic beverages was a factor in our evolution away from a society of nomadic hunters and gathers into an agrarian society that would settle down to grow crops (and apparently drink). The first product humans made from grain water before learning to make bread was beer. Beer can help you with growing grass. How is beer and grass associated with each other? Next time you see brown spots on your lawns, pour beer on them. The grass will make use of the nutrients, sugar and energy in the beer and grow better. If you ever find slugs and snails in the grass, putting salt on them, to kill them, seems to be a big chore. Take a wide-mouthed container and half-fill it with beer. Bury it in your garden, in such a way that its mouth is at the ground level. Slugs and snails will be attracted to it and, in the process, get drowned. Aside from environmental uses, beer can also be beneficial to the objects around us. Want to bring the shine back to your gold ornaments? Put beer in a cup and dip a piece of cloth in it. Now, rub the gold object, without stones, with the dipped-in cloth. After it starts giving a renewed sign, dry it with a second cloth. Also, beer can polish wooden furniture. If you have some flattened beer left with you, use it to polish your old wooden furniture. Dampen a washcloth with beer and rub the cloth over the furniture, giving it more shiny and healthy look. Beer cannot only polish furniture but it also Removes Stains. For those looking for a solution to their stained clothes or carpet, beer will be the best bet. Pour beer onto the stain and gently rub the area with a brush. After the stain gets removed, blot the area with some water and let it dry. Beer also contains to personal uses. For instance, softening your hair. If you want to make your hair extra soft, make a shampoo with beer. Take half a can of beer and mix in a raw egg. Massage it into your hair and rinse well. You can also rub in a mixture of 15ml beer and 70ml warm water into your hair and rinse it off. This substance can also remove foot odor. You can use beer to remove bad odor from your feet. Wash your feet with beer and then rinse them with soap and water. Dry your feet with a towel and put some talcum powder on them. In addition, it can also remove stains, For those looking for a solution to their stained clothes or carpet, beer will be the best bet. Pour beer onto the stain and gently rub the area with a brush. After the stain gets removed, blot the area with some water and let it dry. Since beer was discovered, it has been in many different cultures and regions. The usage of beer plays a different role in various of countries. Beer Traditions The Honeymoon 4,000 years ago in Babylon, it was an accepted practice that for a month after the wedding, the brides father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead or beer he could drink. In ancient Babylon, the calendar was lunar-based based on the cycle of the moon. The month following any wedding was called the honey month which evolved into honeymoon. Mead is a honey beer and what better way to celebrate a honeymoon. Pubs in Ireland, and you won’t find TVs lining the walls, but people sitting around in circles, drinking pints, and talking with one another. The activity of drinking beer has taken on creative forms to include drinking games, such as beer pong, or visiting multiple bars and pubs in an evening to enjoy a beer from each one. As the consumption of beer has continued to grow in popularity, with beer being one of the most consumed beverages in the world, beer festivals have increased. Most notable is the German festival, Oktoberfest, which just ended. Over 200 years old, the festival began in Germany and has grown to feature cities across the world holding their own Oktoberfest events, with live entertainment, German food, and beer. As the number of breweries has increased, they have begun to partner with nearby cities to hold their own beer festivals. You can often find a number of regional and national beer festivals taking place almost any month of the year. Beer and nutrition? You dont usually see those two words together, but perhaps beer is a bit misunderstood. It may actually be good for you when consumed in moderate amounts. Beer has been brewed for just about as long as humans have been cultivating crops and is actually made with some very healthy ingredients. Those ingredients are hops, brewers yeast, barley and malt. There are different styles of beer and each style has a distinctive flavor and color. Tasting and learning about the different types of beer is as much fun as tasting and learning about the different types of wine. Drinking one beer per day may be good for your health because it has been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Why? Experts suggested that the folate found in beer may help to reduce homocysteine in the blood and lower homocysteine levels mean a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Lab studies have found constituents in beer that lower triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in mice. Drinking one beer per day reduces blood clotting so some studies found that cardiovascular patients who drank one beer per day also lived longer. Other studies have found that women who consume one beer each day have improved mental health. Drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages in moderation may also improve bone density. Of course that doesnt mean that if one beer is good, three or four must be better. That isnt true. Drinking more than one beer or any alcoholic beverage per day can put too much alcohol in your system and that isnt good for you. Heavy drinking has been associated with several health problems, so moderation is definitely the key with drinking beer. The studies also point to one beer per day as being beneficial, not drinking all seven beers in one day per week. That type of binge drinking will overload you system with alcohol too. The benefits of beer nutrition probably have nothing to do with the alcohol and there are some low-alcohol beers and non-alcohol beers available which offer the same heart-protective effect as regular and light beers.

The Definition Of Risk Health And Social Care Essay

The Definition Of Risk Health And Social Care Essay Risk Analysis, what for? (RA) can be defined like a process or technique used to measure the effect of the unknown, identifying the possible threats, analyse them and find measures to apply to eliminate or reduced this possible threat. This technique is used by a broad diversity of organisations, private and governmental ones (NATO, FAO, WHO, EFSA, OIE, ECDC), in the food safety sector in Spain by AESA/AESAN. . There are four stages to define in the RA system: hazard identification, risk assessment, risk management and risk communication. For a Risk to exist there has to be a hazard, which needs to be identified in the first instance. A hazard can be defined as a situation, or a condition that can make damage or make some kind of losses, to humans being, animals or environment (ISDR) . Hazard identification is a process or steps to take to permit us identify the possible threat in a situation. It is possible to link a particular hazard to a potential risk, but its not possible to identify all the hazards Risk assessment can be defined as the estimation, qualitative or quantitative, of the risk resulting from the hazard. There is two main processes qualitative and quantitative that must be specific depending on the situation. Risk management is the application of the necessary measures to evaluated, monitoring and take effective control of the risks, to minimize the possible negative impact of the development of this risk.(5,6) Risk communication tries to give a clear picture about the risk. This process requires a clear and exposed communication between all the parties involved, (stakeholders). This only can be achieved if some requisite take place: exchange of information, recognition of the grade and appreciation of risk, understanding the effects of options and create support for decisions. This can be achieved through meetings, discussions, interviews, web-blogs, Radio, TV. The following diagram shows the relationship between the three components of RA. (7). In Spain RA has become strategically important in veterinary and animal health (9).It is now a common tool in veterinary public health and used by governmental bodies that play a role in imposing regulations designed to protect animals or human health (AESA, MARM, RASVE, SIR, etc.). In the veterinarian field the RA can be conducted by two main systems. They are based on two models, one adopted by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) and the one used by the Codex Alimentarius. Under the umbrella of the FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme, in 1963 was elaborated the Codex Alimentarius Commission with the mission of created procedures and codes of practice to regulated the food standards. (8). The RA system of the Codex has these main points: Risk Assessment Risk Management Risk Communication These definitions can be found in the Procedural Manual (13th Edition) of the Codex (REF). The Procedural Manual (13th Edition) of the Codex provides these definitions: Risk Assessment: A scientifically based process consisting of the following steps: hazard identification, hazard characterization, exposure assessment, and risk characterization. Risk Management: The process of evaluate alternatives policy, in consultation with all interested parties, considering risk assessment and other factors relevant for the health protection, the promotion of fair trade practices, prevention and control options. Risk Communication: The interactive exchange of information throughout the RA process concerning risk, related factors and risk perceptions, among assessors, managers, consumers, industry, and other interested parties, including the risk assessment findings and risk management initials decisions. The system used by the OIE, the CM model, comprises of the following components: (Apx 1) Hazard Identification Risk Assessment Risk Management Risk Communication. These definitions can be found in the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦..of the OIE (REF). (10) The OIE defines Hazard identification as the process of identifying the pathogenic agents which could potentially be introduced to the commodity considered for importation. Hazard identification is an added component in this system. It is a process used to identify hazards in a given situation that may pose a change in risk to animal or human health. (10) Risk assessment is described as the evaluation of the likelihood and the biological and economic consequences of entry, establishment, or spread of a pathogenic agent within the territory of an importing country. Risk management is the process of identifying, selecting and implementing measures that can be applied to reduce the level of risk. Risk communication is the interactive exchange of information on risk among risk assessors, risk managers and other interested parties. The main difference between the two systems is that the OIE has the hazard identification as a stage of the RA. The Codex system has the hazard identification as a part of the risk assessment (Apx 2). The Codex risk assessment stages: The OIE risk assessment stages: Hazard identification Release assessment Hazard characterisation Exposure assessment Exposure assessment Consequence assessment Risk characterization Risk estimate The perception about hazard differs between the Codex and the OIE. The Codex is determined in the relation cause/effect and the severity of the possible consequences. The main pointing the codex is the identification of the hazard, which is measure by descriptive categories; high, medium, lowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ The objective of the OIE is the possible pathogens which represent a possible hazard in animals and animals product, and the management of this risk. The main point for the OIE is the assessment of the Risk release. In the OIE the RA is definitive linked with the cost /benefit of the measure to control this risk. The Codex highlights the relationship dose/response with the exposure assessment and defined as hazard characterisation. The OIE take into account all harmful effect. The Codex considers the effect of the consequence of the modification in the dose of the risk, (pathogen, toxin, or antibiotics residues ). In Spain the OIE system is used by the authorities to develop qualitative RA of the risks at the introduction of infect contagious diseases into Spain and the rest of Europe from Morocco, Africa. In this kind of analysis different parameters are used: Prevalence of infection, volume of trade, capacity of the virus to survive, the seasons and climatic conditions and potential for infection. The magnitude of the consequences goes in hand with the probability of transmission and spread. This is normally linked with costs and benefits of the decisions taken and the possible economic lost consequences of no action. Usually RA take place during an Outbreak of animal disease in counties closed to the own borders. The quicker approach is a qualitative RA. The Codex is concerned about food safety. The Programme are designed for protecting the public health and ensuring reasonable manage process in the food trade, promoting harmonization in food standards in the work undertaken by international governmental and private organizations. This Analysis is normally quantitative. It uses different tools and methods, such as the Monte Carlo methodology. The data comes from different sources that usually are collated into a model to predict prevalence and quantity. This Analysis takes into account the predictable exposures and other factors such consumer types, genders, health status etc. They included the effect of the uncertainty and variability. For all this is necessary to use mathematical and probabilistic models developed by computers programmes. One example is the QRA of the impact on human health on resistance of Salmonella Enteriditis and S. Tiphimurium in poultry products and eggs. Here they investigate how the use of antibiotic favours the emerging resistance in pathogens that could be transmitted to humans and animals through the food supply .This quantitative study gives a numeric value to the risk, because sufficient data is available (11,12,13,15 ) There are different types of RA: From Qualitative (descriptive), semi- quantitative to quantitative RA (deterministic/ stochastic). Qualitative RA is used in areas of the food security, human and animal health services. For every hazard established, an estimated risk is made on the severity of the likelihood of the hazard occurring. However, the classifications used are often inadequate as the likelihood of a hazard to occur is never precise.. Also a probability database is not required, but there needs to be sufficient information that let us establish the likelihood and the effect of the risk problem. This method can be subjective, which reduces its significance. The envisaged goal is important to carry out the appropriate activities that will lead to the expected outcomes. The Quantitative RA system, used the Covello Merkhofe, works with simulation modelling. The Monte Carlo simulation is a reliable tool, flexible, is simple to test and to describe and less influence to human mistake in the progression of the model. it is desirable to check it to observe if the model do come with something totally unrealistic. This method is also subjective due to the chance to select the distribution during the description of the data. The semi QRA is a clear approach for the effective control of a range of risk issues. It is commonly used in commercial projects. The SQRA produces a arithmetical risk estimation establish on a combination of qualitative and quantitative data. The problem is that due to a lack of obtainable data, only excessive risk will be avoided with this method. It is therefore not fully acknowledged worldwide. All this models need to be reviewed after the first stage of the assessment has been carried out. In Spain, as in the rest of EU, RA is utilised in a variety of areas such as education, engineering, science, environment, private and public governmental agencies (health service, military, banking, trade, etc.). Spain has to follow a specific EU legislation in activities related to food production. The use of the ARICPC, Spanish version of the HACCP, became compulsory by the Real Decreto 2207 in 1995,on 28 December. The Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 of the European Parliament and Council of 29 April 2004 are now actually in force. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) is globally recognised as the most excellent system of assuring product preserve by controlling food borne cover hazards. This legislation specifies the compulsory nature of the application of the risk analysis of these kinds of processes bearing in mind the protection of the population; The (EC) 178/2002, Article 6 (Risk Analysis), Paragraph 1 states: In order to achieve the general objective of a high level of protection of human health and life, food law shall be based on risk analysis except where it is not appropriate to the circumstances or the nature of the measure. In Spain the HACCP system is used by the regional governments to regulate the food industry in a broad spectrum of activities: Bakers, ice cream, fishery products, dairy products, meat and meat products, pre-cooked meals, water, preserved food, beer, sugar, wine, oil, juice, vegetables, eggs, catering, spirit, sweets and pastries, abattoirs, cutting plants, butcher shops, restaurants, coffee shops, barsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦etc. In all this activities there is a Risk to identify, the risk in food or agro food risks. There are nutritional risks, chemical risks (arsenic, nitrates, nitrites, cadmium) physical risks (temperatures, ionising radiations), biological risks (Salmonellas, Campylobacter, E. Coli, C. Burnetii, TSE) ,pesticides, veterinarian drugs residues. . The residues from pharmaceutical production, from hospitals, illegal drugs, Veterinary medicine use, like antibiotics and steroids, and farming activities.(pict1) Other areas, where RA is applied, are those derived from animal diseases outbreaks. In March 2009 there was a higher risk that the Serotype 4 or the Bluetongue (which had been eradicated from Spain) could come back from the North of Africa because of the wind carrying the infected vector over. This was outlined in the last RA by Sanidad Animal so they could take the necessary measures. By the Order ARM/575/2010, in all the south of Spain, all livestock had to be vaccinated against the serotype 4 of Bluetongue, to stop the spread of the disease. Possible animal health or animal related human health hazards, that require RA, may include new or unusual infections in animals such as Bluetongue in the north European cattle, West Nile virus infection in Europe, or increases in endemic zoonotic diseases like Leishmaniasis, an infection caused by a protozoan parasite of the genus Leishmania (14). The amount of hazards both related to animal diseases and food safety, represents really a long list .It is important for the body control, first to identify which of the hazards are most likely to represent and immediate threat. The following stage will be to formulate the right question, which could be very simple and straightforward. For instance: which risks are you or your organisation interested in? Is there a case to do a Risk Assessment? What outcome is expected? Zero risk or acceptable risk? The right questions will lead to relevant information already made available. However, if the questions lack in timing and dont deliver the correct definition of the hazard/s involved, and this is not sorted at an early stage, the following part of the assessment could be biased or completely compromised. The whole information and data accessible will define the pathway to taken. If the hazard is a disease, it is important to obtain a wide range of information from different sources, to gain an overall picture of the hazard presented and the possible risks estimated from the result of the evaluation of data collated. This process is time consuming, demands expertise, resources and financial backing. Financial and human resources are fundamental to avoid unreported health status. Developing countries dont necessarily have the support and resources available to apply the necessary systems effectively and rely strongly on outside support. Generally a lack of finances stops the development of specialist colleges and institutions. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE Adagiorum Collectanea 1536, Erasmo de Rotterdam (Rà ³terdam, 1466/69)

Ivan Denisovich and Humanity :: Free Essay Writer

Ivan Denisovich and Humanity Who could possibly be able to imagine the utter hopelessness and misery that a soviet prisoner experienced during Stalinism. Thousands of innocent men were taken from their families, homes, and lives, stripped of their dignity and banished to the harsh labor camps where they were to spend the rest of the days scraping out an existence and living day to day. This is exactly what Alexander Solzhenitsyn tries to express in his masterpiece work One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Solzhenitsyn gives the reader a glimpse into the life of every man who ever experienced this hardship and shares the small acts of thriving humanity that are sparingly, but unendingly passed through their dreary lives and offer a bit of comfort to help them get through a single hour, a day, or even just a meal time. Solzhenitsyn uses One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich to portray the endurance of humanity through out terrible hardships and shows the strength of the human spirit. Through out the day Ivan observes various acts of humanity that help him and his fellow prisoners retain a portion of their dignity even though the camps are specifically designed to completely degrade their captives. Denisovich, or Shukhov as he is called, uses small acts of consideration to help him and his gang get through the day. On the second page of the book, the reader learns that Shukhov often gets up early in the morning so that he may have a little time to himself and so he may even â€Å"bring one of the big gang bosses his dry felt boots while he was still in his bunk, to save him the trouble of hanging around the pile of boots in his bare feet and trying to find his own.† (pg.2). Though Shukhov may do various odd jobs such as â€Å"running around to one of the supply rooms where there might be a little job, sweeping or carrying something† or â€Å"going to the mess hall to pick up bowls from the tables and take piles of them to the dishwashers† in o rder to receive extra food, but this can also be seen as an act of honor. Rather than doing an underhanded deed such as stealing food from innocent men the way the camp orderlies do, Shukhov tries to earn his food through honest work such as repairing boots, making things to sell, or doing extra work.

Harry Lavender Essay Essay

As you all know, even a visual tells a story. However, characters in a text through distinctive voices demonstrate their personalities which contribute to an insightful understanding of the text. Marele Dey’s novel, The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender (Harry†¦) 1988 expounds the criminal activities of crime boss Harry Lavender whose distinctive voice though unheard is loudest in the text portraying his personality of a corrupt crime lord. In conjunction the narrator, Claudia Valentine’s voice is heard through her thoughts and actions portraying a person who fights such evil men like Lavender. Howard Hawk’s film, The Big Sleep (1946) based on Raymond Chandler’s novel by the same name demonstrates that crime even in those bleak times after the War demonstrated the distinctive voices of criminals. How many of us have heard power invested in individuals but have not seen them? They exist in reality and in texts that capture the interest of their audiences through the uniquely moulded voices of characters. Some voices are heard strongly throughout the text while others are silent but just as important. Dey’s significant character rather ironically is the crime boss Harry Lavender (Lavender) whose unheard voice written as monologues in ‘ Up here ..†¦I glide effortlessly along the streets, jump from building to building’, through first person narration not only reflects the arrogance in his voice but also demonstrates his power as a crime boss. He dreams of his funeral which he describes as, ‘†¦in death as in life the police allow me smooth passage†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ through an arrogant tone to show his importance ironically as a social outcast. The protagonist, detective, Claudia Valentine’s voice is largely in first person narrative ‘I woke up feeling like death’ metaphorically alluding to her hangover from a night’s drinking. Dey’s unique style of crime writing lies in her deception of her audience into believing that the distinctive voice in the opening chapter is that of a male. Her visual imagery of, ‘†¦. ash trays full of butts†¦.. empty bottles of Jack Daniels’ including a â€Å"good-looking blonde in the bed next to me† challenges the audiences pre-conceived notions, as they assume the blonde is female. The narrator’s voice brings out distinctive features of a â€Å"male† talking and is a subversion of the usual detective genre which is dominated by â€Å"male† detectives. As a detective fiction film noir text, The Big Sleep reflects the â€Å"bleak darkness† of the Post World War one era in which economic crisis, prohibition and the appearance of a ‘gangster’ underworld created an atmosphere of social decay† caused by black market in liquor supplies. Philip Marlowe, the detective emerges as the lonesome anti-hero who confronts the complex crime. He is the epitome of the hard-boiled detective, isolated from society, his brusque and laconic vernacular characterising the painfully honest risk taker, drinker and smoker, with a deep voice that is so characteristically American. The opening scene is captured as Marlowe is obscured when the butler opens the door and the audience can only hear his deep laconic American drawl that typifies Humphrey Bogart’s style. ‘My Name is Marlowe, Mr Sternwood wants to see me’, which prepares the audience through his distinctive voice to meet a man of strength and confidence. General Sternwood a man of some wealth unlike Lavender is well respected and does not succumb to blackmail which was the reason he summons Marlowe. His voice is distinctive as he asserts that, ‘I do not bend to blackmail’ portraying his good values. Hawk’s treatment of the women whose voices are distinctive but beguiling is often criticised with claims that he portrayed them as villains in accordance with the femme fatale of the 1950’s film noir. The general sees one of his daughters Carmen as naà ¯ve and always drunk, ‘Carmen is a child who likes to pull wings off flies’ illustrating her child-like personality through the simile and image of a butterfly. This demonstrates how people’s characters are shaped by what they say. In conclusion characters through their distinctive voices capture the audience’s interest.

Humans And Animals Relationships Essay

Whether its social, business, or personal, animals play an extremely important role in the lives of humans. Humans have been using animals to survive since before 100 BC. Animals have been protectors, companions, benefactors, co-workers, and even best friends. Humans need animals in their lives to stay healthy mentally and even physically. Animals are used in everyday physical therapy to increase movement in the handicapped or elderly. Animals help with physical fitness which will boost their moods substantially. For example, elderly people that are in nursing homes have been able to work with animals as a type of therapy to improve and maintain their function and to increase their quality of life while in the nursing home. It is a proven fact that animals lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and keep their heart in check. Dogs can detect the sudden drop in the level of blood glucose and alert the owner to eat or take their medication. Pets can not only help handicapped and the elderly , but children as well. Children who grow up with pets have less risk of allergies and asthma; many also learn responsibility, compassion, and empathy from having pets. Pets are natural mood enhancers. One of the reasons for these therapeutic effects is that most pets fulfill the basic human need to touch. Even hardened criminals in prison have shown long-term changes in their behavior after interacting with pets, many of them experiencing mutual affection for the first time. Some state prisons will bring in dogs for the inmates to train, so they can learn to interact with others and to give them a purpose. While a person is with an animal their body actually goes through physical changes that make a difference in their mood. The hormone that is associated with stress is actually lowered, while the production of serotonin is being increased from the level it was previously at when the person wasn’t around the animal. Sometimes, while working with a patient, a counselor might use a dog in therapy. In doing so, it will raise their serotonin level and allow  the patient to be more comfortable. Therapists have recently started prescribing pets as a way of dealing with and recovering from depression and anxiety. The unconditional love that is given from a pet to a human when petting it or playing with it, actually elevates their moods to a state where they are no longer depressed or anxious. Stroking, holding, cuddling, or otherwise touching a loving animal can rapidly calm and soothes humans when they’re stressed. The companionship of a pet can also ease loneliness, and some pets are a great stimulus for healthy exercise, which can substantially boost mood. The more that people interact with animals the less likely they will isolate themselves; pet lovers and pet owners can easily talk to each other about their pets without talking about uncomfortable subjects. Dogs help with people who are suffering PTSD. Dog can provide a sense of security, calming effects, and physical exercise that can make a positive difference in the life of those that suffer with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Like all assistance dogs, a psychiatric service dog is individually trained to do work or perform tasks that mitigate their handler’s disability. The dog will be able to calm the owner and teach him/her not to be afraid. It will be able to bond with its owner when he/she cannot bond with other humans. People with PTSD are afraid to be alone in public and the company of a dog will ease that fear. Animals have been used to assisted humans for as long as anyone can remember. They help psychologically with the world around them. They help with physical condition that’s going on with their body. Humans can bond easily with an animal more so than another human being. Whether it’s from a problem they are born with or something that stumbled upon them, they can always rely on animals to ease their pain. Work Cited Siegel, J. (1990).
